Vitiligo Symptoms

Vitiligo Symptoms

Vitiligo generally called white spots illness as well or Leucoderma, in which the skin loses its pigment due to the annihilation of melanocytes. Melanocytes are such pigment cells which found in the epidermis (the surface layer of the skin) and there are responsible for producing Melanin (a dark pigment that gives skin its color) and protects against ultraviolet radiation., The skin becomes pale when melanocytes stop producing melanin leaving areas of white patches this is called vitiligo.

To describe Vitiligo symptoms, the onset of the vitiligo symptoms is very visible in darker and wheatish skinned people as the contrast of white patches looks obvious against dark skin. The manifestation of flat areas of normal-feeling skin with complete pigment loss is sudden or gradual and appearance of vitiligo symptoms the lesions appear as flat areas with no pigment.

In common the affected areas are the face, elbows, knees, hands feet, and genitalia.
The initial vitiligo symptoms are easily observable with flat white spots or patches on your skin. Vitiligo symptoms usually starts the first white patch appears on the skin area remains exposed to the sun. Vitiligo symptoms do not cause physical discomfort to your skin, such as itching etc.

Vitiligo symptoms, vitiligo most commonly affects traumatic areas particularly on the face, upper chest, hands and groin. It may be widespread, affecting both sides of the body it may affect only one side of the body or it may affect only one localized area.
If the affected area contains hair, the hair may turn white then vitiligo symptoms sharply distinct white patches are seen rather obviously. Sometimes there may be seen by a circular white patch, resembling a halo.

Melanocytes

Melanocytes are special skin cells which are responsible of skin pigmentation. These cells produce a special pigmentation fluid called melanin for skin. This is dark brown substance, determine skin specific tone.

Melanocytes have great importance in the pigmentation process of skin, because all pigmentation material of skin is generated in melanocytes. When melanocytes in a part of skin are destroyed or deactivated by any reason the causes a colorless patch at that area and the problem is referred as depigmentation in skin.

Melanocyte cells have a close relation to skin condition vitiligo because this condition occurs when melanocytes are destroyed due to some abnormal reaction of body own defense system or some other causes.

Vitiligo Treatment and Melanocytes:

As mentioned vitiligo is depigmentation problem in skin and almost all medical treatment methods work to maintain the production of melanocytes or the productivity of melanocytes itself.

Pre Cautions about Vitiligo

Pre Cautions about Vitiligo

Some time precaution are more important than the treatment of any disease. Specially for skin condition precaution plays a vital role in getting rid from different skin conditions.
So I decide to write a post about some precaution regarding vitiligo treatment options and diet plan for skin disease vitiligo.

Vitiligo is totally cosmetic problem and not occurs due drinking milk after eating fish. And it does not affect the health of its sufferer. Vitiligo is not transferable skin condition however it has a little genetic factor and in some cases runs in families.

Cautions for different vitiligo Treatment:

Psoralens:
Psoralens are widely used substance for vitiligo, used in various remedies due to its quality that it is strong sensitizer for skin. Take care about children and Psoralens should not be used before the age of 9 years.

Here are some word quoted by Anti-Vitiligo regarding Psoralens as a vitiligo treatment option
“Psoralen is a very potent substance, and should not be used without adequate knowledge in its use.”

Steroids:
Take care about use of Steroids and try to avoid using areas like the lips, palms, soles, over bony areas, and in those without hair or those, which have white hair.
So steroids must used under the supervision of specialists.

Photo Therapies:
PUVA and uvb narrow band treatments are famous options for many skin and general disease.
Both are uv rays based treatment, PUVA is uva based and Narrow band uvb is uvb rays based treatment.
UV (ultra violet) rays are hazardous for skin. And both uva and uvb damage your body DNA and cause skin cancer. As its claimed by many skin cancer institutions that about 90% of the skin cancer cases are those which occurs due to uvb lithg.

Laser treatment options are also newly introduced for vitiligo treatment. So like PUVA and uvb treatment, care must nee regarding laser treatment. Get some feed back by other patients of vitiligo which have tried these treatment therapies may be better for the reliability of the treatment option and professional expertise of the person in treatment centers.

Cautions About Foods:

This is better for vitiligo patients specially during treatment that patients should avoid consuming highly antigenic material like fish, meat and eggs.

Vitiligo Types

An autoimmune disorder vitiligo is going to be a serious problem.
Vitiligo is a common irregulartory of the immune system. About the cause of vitiligo there are many theories which suggest due the toxic production in the system which start destruction of melanocyte cell. Melanocytes are the cell which make melanin which is responsible for pigmentation or coloration and due to the absence of melanin on any part of the body white spots of vitiligo appear. Vitiligo result in white spots on in the body, and there are currently no acceptable permanent means to halt this process. When we say treating vitiligo, it means eliminating the white spots weather root cause is addressed or not.

Types of Vitiligo
Vitiligo can be categorized into following
Focal pattern vitiligo, Segmental pattern vitiligo
Acrofacial vitiligo, Vulgaris Vitiligo, Universal vitiligo

Focal Vitiligo

One or more macules in one area but not clearly in a segmental distribution.
In general terms Focal Vitiligo is localized to a single area. If the patient has a single patch on hand, face or leg with no other occurrences of disease on other body parts.
Focal vitiligo if not active is generally more suited for localized treatments. The first option would be a topical medicine and if it does not work or is unacceptable due to other reasons, surgery and tattooing may be considered.

Segmental Vitiligo

Segmental vitiligo is often called Lip Tip vitiligo because it is mostly limited to lips , distal parts of the fingers and toes. It is most difficult to treat segmental vitiligo.
Segmental vitiligo has quasi-dermatomal pattern with one or more spots. These patches are of irregular shap and asymmetric in distribution.
One or more patches are distributed within the same segment (anatomical distribution of the body) of the body.

Acrofacial Vitiligo

Acrofacial vitiligo is very common distribution of the disease in this type of vitiligo the white spot are restricted to parts away from the center of the body.
Affecting distal extremities and face. Some patches on face and some on other body parts, but not on all over the body.
the disease effects the exposed parts of the body such as head , face , feet and hand, therefore it also causes the great emotional distress.

Vitiligo Vulgaris

Due to wide spread it may take long time for treatment and normally it is not easy to treat this type of vitiligo. Also surgery may not be an option for patients of vitiligo vulgaris. In vitiligo vulgaris small patches of vitiligo are spread in a pattern like shower admixed with normal skin in segmental or acrofacial pattern.
This is the most common type with bilaterally symmetrical lesions, predominantly distributed over face, neck, torso, fingers, toes, palms, soles and facial orifices.

Universal Vitiligo

Universal Vitiligo or Vitiligo totalis is the complete or nearly complete loss of skin pigment. The pigment is usually lost from entire body surface except a few small islands of normally pigmented skin. Permanent medical bleaching of the normal skin is usually the only option.

Except these vitiligo types there are some other diseases which are looks like vitiligo but there is a clearcut different between these disease and vitiligo.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder in the human skin. The human skin contains special skin cells (melanocytes) that produce the pigment melanin which colors the skin.
The skin's melanocytes cells and mucous membranes(tissues) which exist inside of the mouth, nose, genital and rectal areas, and the retina of the eyes are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair may also turn white that grows in areas affected by vitiligo.
Types of Vitiligo
Vitiligo can be categorized into following
1. Localized Vitiligo: Focal pattern vitiligo, Segmental pattern vitiligo
2.Generalized Vitiligo: Acrofacial vitiligo, Vulgaris Vitiligo, Universal vitiligo

Causes of vitiligo
There are several theories regarding the cause of vitiligo but the actual cause is not fully known. According to one theory, people with vitiligo develop antibodies that, turn upon them and destroy their own melanocytes instead of protecting them. There is another theory according to which the melanocytes somehow attack and destroy themselves. Finally, some people with vitligo have reported that a single event such as severe sunburn or an episode of emotional distress is the main cause of this order. Scientifically, events of this nature have not been accepted as the main cause of vitiligo. These are merely coincidences.

Some Stats about Vitiligo
The number of people affected by vitiligo disorder ranges from 40-50 million. It forms about 1 to 2% of people in the world. 2 to 5 million people have the disorder in the United States alone.

Vitiligo affects all races and both sexes equally and ninety-five percent of its victims are below the age of 40.

Relatioin between vitiligo and autoimmune system
In Autoimmune diseases, a person's immune system reacts against the body's own organs or tissues. Vitiligo is found to be more common in people with certain autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune diseases that are associated with vitiligo include: hyperthyroidism (over activity of the thyroid gland), adrenocortical insufficiency (the adrenal gland does not produce enough of the hormone corticosteroid), alopecia areata (patches of baldness), and pernicious anemia (a low level of red blood cells caused by the failure of the body to absorb vitamin B12).

Is vitiligo inherited
Vitiligo may be hereditary in some cases. Children of vitiligo affected parents are more likely to develop vitiligo disorder. However, most children will not get vitilgo even if a parent has it. Also most people with vitiligo do not have a family history of the disorder.

Large number of inherited disorders are associated with vitiligo. They include: albinism of the ocular type, autoimmune polyendocrinopathy syndrome, congenital deafness with vitilego and achalasia, dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria, ermine phenotype, familial histiocyctic reticulosis, kabuki syndrome, and the syndrome of spastic paraparesis, vitiligo, premature graying and characteristic facies.

What are the symptoms of vitiligo?
White patches (depigmentation) on the skin are the foremost symbol of vitiligo. These patches are more common in sun-exposed areas, including the hands, feet, arms, face, and lips. Other common areas are the armpits and groin, and around the mouth, eyes, nostrils, navel, and genitals.

Vitiligo is categorized in focal, segmental, acrofacial, universal and vulgaris vitiligo. In focal pattern, the depigmentation is limited to one or only a few areas. In segmental pattern, depigmented patches are developed on only one side of the body. But in the generalized pattern, depigmentation occurs on different parts of the body.
